Help & FAQ

Every tool on FixGif works the same way: drop a file, pick the settings, press Convert and download. Below you will find what each tool does, how to use it, and answers to common questions.

What each tool does

Video to GIF

Turn any video clip into a smooth, high-quality GIF. Choose the part you want, set the size and frame rate, and download.

  1. Drop a video into the box above: MP4, MOV (also iPhone HEVC), WebM, MKV, AVI, MPG, WMV, FLV, 3GP and more.
  2. Drag the purple handles on the bar under the video to choose the part you want. Exact seconds are under Advanced options.
  3. Choose the width and frame rate, then press Convert and download your GIF.

The converter builds an optimized color palette for every clip, so the GIF keeps clean colors and smooth gradients instead of the grainy look of simple converters.

MP4 to GIF

Convert an MP4 video into an animated GIF in a few seconds, right in your browser.

  1. Choose or drop your MP4 file.
  2. Set where the GIF should start and how long it should be.
  3. Pick the width and frame rate, press Convert and download the GIF.

MP4 is the most common video format, and GIF is still the easiest way to share a short loop in chats, forums, documentation and emails.

GIF Maker

Combine several pictures into one animated GIF. Add images, put them in order, choose the speed and download.

  1. Drop two or more images (JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF) into the box.
  2. Reorder the frames with the arrows and remove any you don't need.
  3. Set the delay between frames and the size, then press Convert.

All frames are scaled to fit the first image, so pictures of different sizes still line up nicely.

Open GIF Maker →

Resize GIF

Change the dimensions of an animated GIF while keeping every frame and the original timing.

  1. Drop the GIF you want to resize.
  2. Enter the new width in pixels. The height is calculated automatically.
  3. Press Convert and download the resized GIF.

Resizing is done with Gifsicle, the same well-known tool many professional GIF sites use, so animation, transparency and frame timing are preserved.

Open Resize GIF →

Crop GIF

Cut away the parts of an animated GIF you don't need. Every frame is cropped the same way.

  1. Drop the GIF you want to crop.
  2. Drag on the preview to select the area. Choose an aspect ratio if you need a square or widescreen result.
  3. Press Convert and download the cropped GIF.

Cropping keeps the original quality and timing of the animation and usually makes the file smaller too.

Open Crop GIF →

Rotate & flip GIF

Turn an animated GIF sideways or upside down, or mirror it, without losing a single frame.

  1. Drop the GIF you want to rotate or flip.
  2. Choose 90° right, 90° left, 180°, or a horizontal or vertical flip.
  3. Press Convert and download the result.

Every frame is rotated the same way and the frame delays stay unchanged, so the animation plays exactly like the original.

Optimize GIF

Make animated GIFs much smaller while keeping them looking good.

  1. Drop the GIF you want to compress.
  2. Pick the compression strength and the number of colors. Under Advanced options you can also scale the GIF down or drop frames.
  3. Press Convert, compare the size and download.

The compressor uses Gifsicle's lossy LZW compression, which removes detail the eye hardly notices. Balanced mode often cuts the size by 30–60%.

Open Optimize GIF →

Reverse GIF

Play any animated GIF backwards, or make it go forward and back for a smooth boomerang loop.

  1. Drop the GIF you want to reverse.
  2. Choose Reverse or Boomerang.
  3. Press Convert and download the result.

Boomerang mode plays the frames forward and then backward without repeating the end frames, which creates a seamless loop.

Open Reverse GIF →

GIF Speed

Speed up or slow down any animated GIF without re-encoding it, so the quality stays exactly the same.

  1. Drop your animated GIF.
  2. Choose the new speed: below 1× is slower, above 1× is faster.
  3. Press Convert and download.

Only the frame delays are changed, so this is lossless and almost instant even for large GIFs.

Open GIF Speed →

Add Text

Put a caption on an animated GIF in a few seconds, with a clear outline so it reads on any background.

  1. Drop the GIF you want to caption.
  2. Type your text and choose the position, size and colors.
  3. Press Convert and download the captioned GIF.

Text is drawn on every frame with an outline, the classic meme style that stays readable on light and dark scenes.

Open Add Text →

GIF to MP4

Turn an animated GIF into a compact MP4 video that works on Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp and every phone.

  1. Drop the GIF you want to convert.
  2. Press Convert.
  3. Download the MP4 video.

MP4 uses modern video compression, so the same animation is usually many times smaller than a GIF.

Open GIF to MP4 →

WebP to GIF

Convert animated WebP files to GIF so they work in apps and editors that don't support WebP.

  1. Drop the WebP file.
  2. Press Convert.
  3. Download the GIF.

Animation, frame timing and transparency are kept. Colors are reduced to the 256-color GIF palette with a smart quantizer.

Open WebP to GIF →

APNG to GIF

Convert animated PNG files, such as LINE and Telegram stickers, into GIFs that work everywhere.

  1. Drop the APNG or PNG file.
  2. Press Convert.
  3. Download the GIF.

APNG supports millions of colors and smooth transparency, while GIF has 256 colors and on/off transparency. The converter picks the best palette for each frame.

Open APNG to GIF →

GIF to WebP

Convert animated GIFs to WebP, a modern format that is usually much smaller and supported by all major browsers.

  1. Drop the GIF.
  2. Choose the quality.
  3. Press Convert and download the WebP.

Animated WebP supports millions of colors and is often 50–80% smaller than GIF, which makes pages load faster.

Open GIF to WebP →

Split GIF

Extract every frame of an animated GIF as a separate PNG image.

  1. Drop the animated GIF.
  2. Press Convert to extract the frames.
  3. Download single frames or all of them as a ZIP.

Each frame is rendered in full, so you get complete images rather than the partial patches stored inside optimized GIFs.

Open Split GIF →

Combining tools

After any result you can continue with another tool without downloading first. The steps bar above the tool keeps every version: click a step to go back to it, press Back to undo, or use the arrow on a step to download that version.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Everything runs in your browser on your own device. Your files are never sent to FixGif or anyone else, and they disappear when you close the tab.

Which file formats can I use?

GIF, and for converting: MP4, MOV (including iPhone HEVC videos), WebM, MKV, AVI, MPG, WMV, FLV, 3GP, OGV and TS videos, animated WebP and APNG. The GIF maker also takes JPG, PNG and WebP photos.

Is there a file size limit?

There is no fixed limit. Because the work happens on your device, very large videos (hundreds of megabytes) can be slow on older phones. Trimming the clip and choosing a smaller width helps a lot.

Why is the first video conversion slower?

Video tools need a converter of about 30 MB. It downloads once, the first time you use it, and your browser keeps it for the next time.

How do I make a GIF smaller?

Use Optimize GIF. If it is still too big, lower the width with Resize GIF, use fewer frames per second, or keep a shorter part of the video. Each tool shows the expected size before you convert.

Why does my GIF look grainy or banded?

A GIF can only use 256 colors per frame, so smooth gradients are approximated with small dots (dithering). Keeping 256 colors and a moderate width gives the cleanest result.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. The tools work in current versions of Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Edge on phones, tablets and computers. Nothing needs to be installed.

Is it really free? Are there watermarks?

Yes, it is free, with no sign-up and no watermarks on your GIFs.
